Detachment Echo is a novel based on historical fact. During the Cold War there was hard evidence that American POWs were being shipped from Vietnam to Eastern European "facilities" for medical experimentation.
It was covered up.
In Echo, a US Counterintelligence agent, sent to a border listening post to investigate drug abuse, bears witness to a chain of events that prove American POWs were being held in Eastern Europe. He risks his life to reveal a coverup that goes all the way to the White House.
The screenplay version of Echo was nominated for a Humanitarian Award in a recent international contest. The author was an electronic spy during the cold war who served in some of the venues where Echo takes place, including NSA HQ.

Reminded me of times in the service! Good reading. Couldn't put it down till I was finish. Good reading and good book.
I only gave this 3 stars because the story was not long enough and, for some reason, I did not enjoy the style of writing. It seemed overall to be a little bit rushed and would have benefited from being more in-depth. However, it could only be read with enjoyment at the tale with the touch of light-heartedness helping that. The main character in the story, Lt.Steele, would have benefited from the first requirement at least a modicum of personal intelligence to begin with.
The dealings of the Intelligence services may have come as a shock to some people but it is clearly the case with whatever country's Intelligence action you may read about. Here, in England, UK., it is just the same with especially the Iraq war seen to have been totally unnecessary and illegal. Having said all that, we would be in one hell of a pickle without their excellent fight against terrorism. So, maybe we should leave the politics to that separate band of weird people who populate those halls of power - the politicians?
